How to read a shortlist

The Hub Index is an editorial score out of 10. It helps organize providers that solve the same general problem. The “best fit” column is usually more useful than the decimal because it tells you why a company may belong on your research list.

Why we include alternatives

A useful “best” page needs genuine comparison. We include unrelated alternatives when they offer a meaningful way to solve the same problem. That helps readers understand whether they need a local installer, a specialist manufacturer, a design-led provider or a broader full-service company.

Before choosing the top-ranked company

  1. Confirm the company handles your exact project and location.
  2. Read the deeper profile or linked source.
  3. Send the same scope to two or three appropriate providers.
  4. Compare measurement, material, finish, delivery, installation and exclusions.
  5. Choose from current written proposals.
A ranking is a starting point.

Availability, current pricing, project condition and a well-written proposal can make a lower-ranked provider the better choice for a particular job.
